Tracey Achieves Employment With Support From NOW Group

Young woman standing outside her workplace in Northern Ireland
This is Tracey on her first day taking up her role in Movilla High School outside her very own block - Block E.

Tracey is 33 years old and has never had paid employment since leaving education at 16 years old. She has been looking for jobs to fit in around her busy family life and her needs as someone living with a learning disability. Tracey has 2 beautiful little boys under 5, and the most supportive partner, Chris.

Tracey signed on to NOW Group's Training and Jobs academy in Oct 2022. Through this programme, NOW Group's Employment Officers began supporting Tracey in her search for employment. When Tracey first joined NOW Group, she had been feeling very low in her self-esteem and confidence and felt there was no option for her to find employment.

Our Employment Officer Wendy showed Tracey patience, support and understanding through her employment journey. They met weekly to enjoy a hot chocolate while talking about jobs and having general conversation. In between these meetings Tracey worked hard on job applications, interview skills, communication skills and a very challenging interview with the Education Authority.

On Friday 1st September 2023, Tracey was offered a job with the Education Authority in Movilla High School as a cleaner. Although Tracey felt anxious about starting her new position, she was empowered and excited about her accomplishment of gaining employment.

Tracey commented, “I have had the best day today! My nerves have really settled after going into school to learn about my new job. There is so much to learn and lots of tasks to do, but I know I can do them.

My manager said it will take me some time and a few weeks to learn all my tasks and I am ok with that. She is really nice and stayed with me until the end of the day. I really enjoyed it, and I cannot wait to go back tomorrow. I want to thank Wendy and the NOW Group for everything they have done to help me”.
